A history born of legacies

OHSU and OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital exist today because of the legacies of people who believed in the great potential to advance research, education and care. Through planned giving, those people have gifted current and future Oregonians the chance to create a healthier future for all.

In 1921, Frank S. Doernbecher left $200,000 through his will to benefit the people of Oregon. The Doernbechers were convinced of the need for a special hospital to serve children under the care and supervision of the University of Oregon Medical School.

On Christmas Eve 1924, the family of Charles Samuel "Sam" Jackson donated 88 acres on Marquam Hill to be used "for the benefit of the Medical School and affiliated institutions." The Jackson legacy helped create today's Oregon Health & Science University—where healing, teaching, discovery and outreach come together to serve the people of the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

The planned gifts of visionary donors make a profound and lasting impact. Planned gifts—large or small, whether unrestricted or directed to a specific school, department, program, research area or endowment—qualify for membership in the OHSU Legacy Society.

To recognize your generosity and inspire philanthropy in others, planned gift donors receive the following benefits:

  • Invitations to exclusive events, including society luncheons and medical chats with leading researchers and experts

  • Subscription to Ignite Magazine, a magazine celebrating stories of philanthropic impact and the generous donors behind them
  • Subscription to the Insights newsletter
